Back to school without breaking the bank: 4 secrets to save big

If you have a new teen driver in your family, the last thing you should be stressing about is car shopping.  That’s why we’ve made it easy for you with four simple things to keep in mind.

•Don’t let high horsepower vehicles tempt you.  Your teen will be tempted to push speeding past the limits.

•Skip the sports cars.  Bigger, heavier vehicles are ideal for protection during a crash or rollover.

•Electronic stability control is a must.  It works even better than that imaginary brake pedal you keep pressing, trust us.  It will help  your teen maintain control of the vehicle around curves and on slippery roads.

•Pick vehicles with the best safety ratings possible from the IIHS and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Are you a well-mannered motorist? Make sure you're not guilty of this...

Hey, you! Don't be a bad driver! There are a few behaviors that are especially harmful, and we want you to break these bad habits now. It could save a life, or at the least, save someone from experiencing road rage.

Stop using your cell phone while you're driving - you got it, no texting or calling. If you absolutely have to make a phone call, at least invest in Bluetooth devices or put it on speaker so you have both hands on the wheel.

Stop cutting people off. You know that driver who cuts across four lanes of traffic because they almost missed their turn? Yeah, don't be that person. It puts others in danger and is bad for your car. Plan ahead! And don't always trust your GPS - those pesky last minute recalculations will get you. It's safer to simply turn around further up the road.

Don't tailgate! There should be ample space between you and the driver in front of you in the event that someone needs to make an emergency stop. No one likes getting rear ended.

Learn how to merge. Drivers who don't know how to merge into another lane smoothly cause some of the worst accidents and pile ups.

Kia Holds High Hopes for the Soul EV's U.S. Debut

http://o.aolcdn.com/hss/storage/midas/59c2d8e64cada00363d5be74e06275ae/200107485/kia-soul-ev.jpg
While its sister brand Hyundai invests in hydrogen fuel cell technology, Kia is entering the battery-powered electric vehicle market with the new Soul EV. The Korean automaker plans to sell some 5,000 units of its first electric vehicle around the world. While it's not saying exactly what proportion it hopes to sell in (or how many it's allocating to) any individual market, the latest reports indicate that it expects the United States to be its biggest market.

Part of that may come down to the growing popularity of electric vehicles in America, but also to the substantial incentives offered by federal and local government agencies towards buying an EV. Though the Soul EV retails for a reported 42.5 million won in South Korea – equivalent to less than $41,500 at today's rates, of which the battery alone accounts for about 40 percent – incentives will mean that the actual cost to a buyer in the US will be about half that, although Kia hasn't announced official pricing yet.

The latest electric vehicle on the market is based on the existing Kia Soul hatchback, a vehicle chosen due to its packaging vis-à-vis more conventionally shaped vehicles. The 27 kWh lithium ion battery pack adds about 330 pounds to the vehicle's curb weight, resulting in a 0-62 time of 11.2 seconds and a 92-mile range.

For the latest iteration of Kia’s minivan, the wheelbase has grown 1.6 inches compared to its predecessor and now standard on the model is a rear spoiler and LED tail lights. The interior now offers more room for seven or eight passengers and features Kia’s new “Slide-n-Stow” system that allows passengers to easily enter the third row or to create more storage space.
